New Light

Flashback to February.

A realtor came over to check out my place and made several suggestions for the apartment including replacing the light fixture over the dining table.

It isn't bad, right? In fact, I think some might even say that it was quite nice.

The problem? The junction box is totally off center from the space for a dining table. And if I had a regular ceiling with drywall, I could have either brought in an electrician to put in a new, centered junction box, or popped in a toggle bolt and hung a chain chandelier directly over the table. Well since this building is relatively new (2005) the ceilings are cement and so that ruled out those options.

This picture shows the light fixture hung more than two feet to the right of center.

And almost two feet left of center in the other direction.

So here is a picture of the solution I came up with. The first bonus: it was on clearance at Home Depot for only $49. Second: installation involved no drilling into the ceiling. And the best part: I no longer have a giant pendant chandelier hanging from the ceiling into the middle of my apartment.

Like any savvy Home Depot shopper, I bought two! So I'm going to replace the kitchen light pictured below with the extra new light I bought on clearance.

So that's what I'll be doing on Saturday!

As far as the old light fixtures, I'll hold onto them for a while and maybe use them in my new place or put them up on craigslist.

  2. Thanks!

The color on the wall is "Bennington Grey" by Benjamin Moore.
